City of Fruitland Employee Charged With Theft Scheme

FRUITLAND, Md. - A City of Fruitland employee, who is accused of embezzling thousands of dollars, is now behind bars. Fruitland Police say they started an investigation after the President of the Fruitland City Council asked them to investigate, a possible internal theft scheme.

That investigation reportedly showed that George Calloway, the Deputy Director of Fruitland Public Works and Utilities, had improperly used city services in excess of more than $8,000, he also allegedly had city government property and equipment in his possession. The City's property was recovered during a search of Calloway's home. Police say the thefts happened between 2011 and 2013.

Calloway was charged with theft $1,000 - $10,000 and theft scheme $1,000 - $10,000, along with other related offenses. He is being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on $100,000 bond. Calloway has been fired, after working for the City of Fruitland for 11 years.
