Fire Marshal: Cambridge Salvation Army Fire "Accidental"

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Investigators have determined that last week's fire at the Salvation Army was an accident.

Maryland State Fire Marshals say the blaze was sparked by an electrical malfunction. Damages are estimated at about $500,000. Evidence of an electric short was reportedly discovered at the damaged area that corresponded with the point of origin of the fire. Officials say heat from the electric short was able to easily ignite insulation and nearby combustible material.

The fire reportedly spread from the area of origin through much of structure after customers discovered smoke. Fire marshals say employees were able to notify the remaining patrons and everyone safely exited the building.

It reportedly took more than 125 firefighters to put the four-alarm fire out on June 24th.
