One Killed, One Critical In Post-Firework Dewey Crash

Posted: Updated:

DEWEY BEACH, Del. - Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a Thursday night crash that killed one and critically injured another in Dewey Beach. Delaware State Police believe 25-year-old Matthew O'Connor was driving on Coastal Highway near Anchor Way around 9:30PM. That's when Roy and Helene Love were leaving the fireworks show and when they went to cross the roadway Troopers say O'Connor struck them both. Roy was pronounced dead, Helene was air-lifted to Christiana Medical Center and is currently listed in critical condition.

O'Connor was properly restrained and not injured in the crash. He is currently being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, but more charges are possible after an investigation is done. He has been released from custody.

SR1 southbound between Anchor Way and Seagull Drive had one lane closed for about two hours as the crash was cleared.

Delaware State Police say, "Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety."
