Delaware HIV Rate Among Highest In Nation

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - With Delaware facing the *seventh* highest rate of AIDS in the United States, and the eighth highest rate of HIV, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services urged residents to get tested on Thursday, June 27th: National HIV Testing Day.

CAMP Rehoboth in Sussex County, an LGBT community center, says 26 people walk through their door for a free, 10 minute test.

According to Delaware's Division of Public Health, 3813 people in the state are living with HIV, with an estimated 800 Delawareans living with HIV who haven't yet been diagnosed.

Research says the highest concentrations can be found amongst intravenous drug users in the Wilmington area, and men having unprotected sex with other men in Sussex County.

Sal Seeley, director of HIV/AIDS prevention at CAMP Rehoboth believes while advances in treatment have helped people with the disease live longer healthier lives, it may have fostered careless behavior "I think people think its easy to pop a pill and its not going to be a worry."

He hopes recent legislation in favor of same sex unions will help curb some dangerous practices.

"Now with the changes, with DOMA being taken away and Delaware introducing gay marriage, hopefully that will bring legitimacy to gay relationships, so folks will start making better choices about sexual health," says Seeley.
