Middle Schoolers STEM Way At Worcester Co. Summer Academy

NEWARK, Md. - School may be out for summer, but some middle schoolers in Worcester County are learning how to STEM their way to the future.

More than 50 rising eighth graders from Pocomoke, Snow Hill and Stephen Decatur Middle Schools were back in school this week making three-dimensional cubes and learning how to extract strawberry DNA at the county's first-ever Science, Technology, Engineering and Math summer academy held at Worcester Tech High.

"I want to be in the biomedical program next year, because I would like to become a doctor and my science teacher told me about this and I thought it'd be a good idea," said Shane Cioccio.

"I've learned about animals, plants and math," said Karla Maldonado.

School officials say the purpose of this academy is to introduce the five STEM pathways offered at Worcester Tech.
