SNOW HILL, Md. - Virginia Townsend Sturgis 94 of Snow Hill, died Monday, June 17, 2013 at Harrison House Senior Living in Snow Hill. Born in Newark, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Manolia Bassett Townsend. Mrs. Sturgis was a lifetime member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 18 years. She was a charter member of the Society of Christian Service. She was very civic minded, receiving the Snow Hill Good Neighbor of the Year Award in 1959.
She is survived by a son, William T. Sturgis and his wife, Ellen Linton Sturgis of Greenville, NC; grandchildren: Andrea Jill Elliott and her husband, Thomas of Newark, MD and Joy Sturgis Hill and her husband, Jonas of Greenville, NC; great-grandchildren: Ashlynn, Connor and Caleb Elliott of Newark, MD and Kellynn, Grace, Holden and Cayden Hill and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lee Sturgis; brothers, Harry, Everett, Bassett and Victor Townsend and sisters, Lena Parks and Helen Baylis.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 11:00 am at Whatcoat United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Andy Frick will officiate.
