SMYRNA, Del. - A Smyrna man is behind bars after allegedly sexually abusing a child for more than a year. Delaware State Police say they started an investigation after being contacted by a relative of both 30-year-old Michael Connor and the 6-year-old child.

That investigation apparently revealed that Connor and the child were in a room at Connor's Paddock Road home, when the relative tried to go inside, Connor pushed the door shut. The relative says they spoke to the child, who reportedly told them that Connor tried to perform a lewd act on her.

During the investigation, Detectives say they interviewed the 6-year-old, and discovered that Connor had been abusing her since July 2011.

On Monday, Connor was arrested, and charged with attempted 1st degree rape, and continuous sexual abuse of a child. He is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institute on $160,000 cash bail.
