Daughter's Heart-Surgery Inspiration For Mom's Children's Book

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL, Del. - As tears filled her eyes, former Delaware State Trooper Lacey Lafferty remembers all too well how quickly life can turn.

Three years ago, her daughter Lacey Lynn underwent surgery to fix a hole in her heart, a condition in which the aortic valve doesn't close, which caused her shortness of breathe just days before the surgery.
"She was very thin, she had a great appetite and could eat, but the calories were being burnt up," Lafferty remembers her daughter before the surgery.

But now eight-year-old Lacey Lynn says she didn't even know she had the condition until after surgery.

"I never knew something was wrong with me, because my mom never told me," said Lacey Lynn.

"I wanted her to be everything she could be," said Lafferty.

After the successful operation at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Lafferty decided to write a children's book, a true story about her daughter's fight with the life-threatening disease.

For Lafferty, it serves as a thoughtful reminder for little Lacey Lynn.

"I would rather not have people go through this and so that's why I did the book," said Lafferty. "I hoping it gives people some hope.

"She's my hero. I'd do anything for her."

Lacey says she's currently working with local stores to sell her book, but it is for sale online. The locations include Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Books-A-Million and Xlibris.
