Delmarva Braces For Severe Weather

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - Threats of High winds, rain and a possibility of hail sent many straight to the grocery store Thursday morning.

"The big change in temperatures on either side adds a lot of instability in the atmosphere. It is going to be right around the edge of tropical storm into hurricane type winds," Meteorologist Travis Michels said.

Fayetta Poulson and her friends made sure to stock up.

"We're getting ready for the storm coming up. We're prepared. We're prepared for whatever comes our way," she said.

But others, not too worried.

"I'm not freaking out about the storm at all. Nope!" Patricia Harrison of Salisbury said.

WMDT's weather watcher George Jackson of American Corner sent in pictures of heavy rainfall in the early morning.

Michels says severe thunderstorm warnings like this one are unusual to Delmarva.

"The climatology of the area, we usually don't see severe weather like this. So when something like this moves into the area, it's not going to be to the extent that they have in the mid-west where they see softball sized hail and big things like that. It's probably not going to be as damaging, but there is a possibility," he said.

A possibility you shouldn't take any chances with.

"You don't want to go into this and say, 'ah, whatever happens, happens.' Being prepared is a key thing. But no need to panic," Travis said.

Travis says the good news with these types of storms is that they move through very quickly. Strong winds should last for only about 15-20 minutes.
