Officials Tell Delawareans To Brace For Mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Recent heavy rains are expected to bring a bumper crop of mosquitoes in Delaware this summer.

State officials said Tuesday that the rain over the past week will leave lots of surface water in which mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

Officials are urging residents to eliminate as much standing water as possible from their properties. That means draining gutters, birdbaths, rain barrels, old tires, flower pot liners, depressions in tarps covering boats, and unused swimming pools.

State mosquito control workers are inspecting and treating large mosquito habitats, including coastal marshes, impoundments and freshwater wetlands.

But they say they still won't be able to prevent waves of adult mosquitoes from emerging over the next two weeks from areas they can't get to.
