Wilmington Mayor Names Public Works Commissioner

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The mayor has named a new public works commissioner for Wilmington after the previous department head abruptly resigned last month.
Mayor Dennis Williams announced Monday that he has tapped Cleon Cauley Sr. to lead the city's largest department while the city searches for a permanent replacement.
Alfonso Ballard abruptly resigned in May after questions were raised about his criminal record.
Cauley has served as acting director of the Delaware Department of Transportation, deputy legal counsel for Gov. Jack Markell and economic development ombudsman.  He will remain employed at law firm Morris James.
John Matlusky, the mayor's chief of staff, says Cauley will remain in the commissioner's job for less than a year during the search and the law firm will be compensated.
