PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Khaled Mohamed is one of 281 students across the nation competing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee title.
WMDT reached out to University of Maryland Eastern Shore, who regionally sponsored Khaled's win to ask what it means to have their first winner at nationals.
"The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is excited Khaled is our inaugural winner and we know he will be a fine representative for the Lower Shore at the national bee this week. We wish him well."
The university will pay all expenses for Khaled and one family member during national bee week at the National Harbor in DC. They add that no public funds provided by the Maryland General Assembly are being used.
