OC Pier Reopens With Ceremonial First Cast

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - The iconic fishing pier in Ocean City re-opens just in time to kick off the new season.

With a fishing pole in his hand, Mayor Rick Meehan made the first cast off the pier, which sustained heavy damage from last fall's Superstorm Sandy. WMDT spoke with Mayor Meehan about what the pier means for the town as tourists and vacationers flock to the beach Memorial Day weekend.

"I think the pier does symbolize, okay we are officially open," said Meehan. "This was kind of the last piece of the puzzle. We were very fortunate, not a lot of damage in Ocean City, but this was significant.

"It's a huge structure and easy thing to rebuild."

Mayor Meehan says the new pilings were built as strong as possible to withstand big storms.
