Tourism Season Also Helps Inland Areas, Not Just Beaches

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md - Delmarva expects much more traffic this holiday weekend compared to previous years. And while many will venture to Ocean City for Memorial Day, Wicomico County may also see some visitors as well.

"We have definitely seen a lot of pre-bookings from upstate New York and the Jersey area because South Jersey is the only beach that they can access," says Nick Patel, manager of The Holiday Inn in Salisbury.

If being stuck in traffic and full of crowded people isn't something tourists want to do, Mayor Jim Ireton says there are just as many things one can do in Salisbury.

"I used to love labor day weekends and memorial day weekends because there were just so many people at the beach. But now, I'd enjoy a pleasant relaxing stroll to the park, that sort of thing."

And the extra tourists may be a great benefit to Roaring Point Park. Maintenance Manager Kelly Hastings tells WMDT that they usually have some sites available on the holiday weekend, but have no sites at all this year. All 102 sites are packed and some people are even making reservations for next year.
