US Park Police To End Furloughs Next Week

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Park Service is ending unpaid leave for U.S. Park Police officers earlier than expected.

National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis says the furloughs will end on June 3, after just three days off, because the agency has found other ways to offset automatic budget cuts imposed by Congress.

The furloughs were to have ended in September with up to 14 days off for officers.

U.S. Park Police patrol the National Mall, the Statue of Liberty and some of the nation's most famous landmarks in New York City and San Francisco.

Jarvis says it's become possible to end the furlough period early because of cost-cutting measures the Park Police have already taken, including limiting overtime and travel, restricting use of helicopters and canceling a class of new recruits.
