DENTON, Md. - An off-duty state trooper is being treated for injuries he sustained after he reportedly confronted vandalism suspects in a car, and was dragged by the vehicle when the driver accelerated and fled the scene.
The incident occurred Wednesday evening. A preliminary investigation indicates that at about 7:15PM, the trooper was traveling off-duty in the area of 7th Street and Market Street in Denton when he observed several people in a car ahead of him who appeared to be involved in some type of vandalism. The trooper exited his vehicle and approached the car ahead of him on foot.
While the trooper was talking with the three individuals in the car, all apparently juveniles, reports indicate that the driver accelerated and the trooper was somehow dragged by the vehicle an undetermined distance down the road. The suspect vehicle fled the scene, but it has been located and the three individuals are currently being questioned by investigators.
The trooper is currently undergoing treatment at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where hospital officials say he is listed in critical condition. The incident is still under investigation.
