Hundreds Of Wicomico Properties Could Be Up For Auction In June

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO Co., Md. - Wicomico County and the City of Salisbury want to remind you to pay your taxes.

More than 1,100 properties in the county still owe taxes to the county and city government. That's $2.3 million in unpaid taxes.

"It may include water or sewer taxes and any liens that either the municipality or the county has placed on the property throughout the year," Director of Finance Andrew Mackel said.

If owners don't pay up by the June 18 deadline, their property will go up for auction the very next day.

"Everybody else who does pay their taxes will probably not appreciate it if there are a few people that never pay their taxes. This is our enforcement mechanism. We auction it at tax sale for the value of those taxes," Mackel said.

Mackel tells WMDT most owners will make payments the week before the tax sale, and he expects that long list to dwindle down to approximately 500 properties.

"This appears in the newspaper four times. It's certainly easier all around if we're paid on the schedule which is then by December 31. This is a cumbersome process," he said.

WMDT spoke with a developer with 91 properties on that list. They say they plan to pay, but for now, time is running out.

The auction takes place on June 19 at the government building in Salisbury. If you're interested in placing a bid, officials ask that you register by calling their offices at 410-548-4810. The sale is open to the public. Property owners who are delinquent in the payment of taxes, are not allowed to bid on properties offered at the tax sale.

Last year 512 properties went up for auction. 127 of those did not sell. That's more than $600,000 owed to the city and county government. Officials say they'll attempt to put them up for auction again next year.
