Chemical Contamination Found In Wells Of Salisbury Subdivision

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - The Health Department of Wicomico County is investigating another contamination of groundwater in the county. Officials say that 1, 2 Dichloropropane has been found in private wells in the subdivision in Doe Run. It is reportedly unrelated to the contamination in groundwater near Morris Mill.

1,2 Dichloropropane is a colorless, flammable liquid, that smells similar to chloroform. It is also moderately soluble in water, and readily evaporates into the air. 1, 2 Dichloropropane does not occur naturally in the environment, but it has been used as a soil fumigant, chemical intermediate, and industrial solvent.

Some samples have already been collected by the Health Department, with help from the Maryland Department of the Environment, more are expected to be added. Affected residents have been notified, and given a supply of bottled water, until officials come up with a long term solution. Authorities are still looking into the potential health issues that comes with the contamination. Residents will be notified as more information becomes available.

Any questions can be directed to the Wicomico County Health Department, Division of Environmental Health at 410-546-4446.
