OC Realtors, Businesses Set For Record Beach Season

OCEAN CITY, Md. - It's been a long six months for Lori Caruso and her family.

Superstorm Sandy destroyed her parents' Long Island home, leaving behind two to three feet of water in their home.

"It's been a long haul," said Caruso.

Every year her family vacations to the Jersey Shore, but this summer, Caruso admits she can't see beach towns being ready.

Ocean City businesses and realtors expect residents from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to head south for the vacation season. Since February, Vantage Resort Realty says they are already seeing a six percent increase in sales from condo rentals and phone calls, by far the largest in five years, according to sales manager Chris Jett.

"We could not respond to the emails and calls fast enough," said Jett. "We intend to be very high occupancy. This is something we have not seen before."

While realtors continue to book rooms throughout the summer, businesses like Dolle's Salt Water Taffy, located on the Ocean City Boardwalk, says business is already booming. General Manager Jay Davenport visited friends and local businesses on the Jersey Shore to take a look at the damages and help out.

"A lot of people aren't ready for the season up there," said Davenport. "A lot of people already decided to come down here."

If this trend continues, he's confident business will really take off.

"There will be times we're stressed out [because of the added business], but that's all part of the summer business," said Davenport.

"This will probably be the place we come," said Caruso. "We like it better. It's really nice down here."

While Vantage Point says they are seeing a six percent increase in sales, other Ocean City realtors say they are more than doubling that. Prudential Rentals says they are already up 28 percent over last year and say there are currently no vacancies for year round rentals.
