UPDATE: John Doe Identified As California Man

Posted: Updated:

SAN JOSE, Calif. - After a nationwide manhunt, authorities have released the identity of accused child pornography producer "John Doe." U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) say they took David J. Stevens, 58, of Salinas, California, in custody on Wednesday, around 24 hours after the information was released to the media. HSI and the Salinas Police Department say they were also able to rescue a child victim identified in the case.

Stevens was seen by a federal magistrate in San Jose, as that is where he will be prosecuted.

ICE Director John Morton said of the case, "when the HSI special agents investigating this case ran out of leads, we turned to the media and the general public for help. A day later, a tip from the public has led to the capture of an alleged predator and more importantly, the rescue of a child. I applaud our investigators, the media and the brave individual who provided critical information. Without the public's help we would not have solved this case."

The agencies say a tip about Stevens identity and whereabouts was called into the ICE tip line.

Stevens residence was searched, where HSI says they found additional evidence related to the case. According to the original report, HSI says they have four videos of child pornography, that are date stamped April 14th and 27th, that were found by Danish National Police on May 3rd.

They also believe that there may be more unidentified child victims, and are asking anyone with information to contact ICE's tip line 1-866-347-2423.
