Swedish Royal Couple Visits Delaware

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Members of Sweden's royal family are joining Gov. Jack Markell and other Delaware officials to celebrate the 375th anniversary arrival of Scandinavian colonists.

Markell welcomed King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to Delaware on Saturday, hosting a luncheon at the Buena Vista conference center in New Castle.

Following a lunch of chilled soup, pan-seared Delaware rockfish and vanilla bean buttermilk pudding, the royals were to travel to Wilmington for a series of events, including riding on a replica of a 17th-century ship that brought Scandinavian settlers to the Delaware Valley.

The visitors included the speaker of Finland's parliament and other dignitaries. They were to conclude their visit to Delaware with a cocktail reception and dinner on the Wilmington riverfront, where Vice President Joe Biden was among the expected guests.
