SU Using Technology To Battle Depression

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - In February, Salisbury University introduced an online training program designed to help students who may be suffering from depression.

It's an avatar-based simulator, called Kognito, which allows students, faculty, and staff learn how to recognize signs of depression, anxiety, and suicide, and how to approach those at risk to provide help.

Anisa Diab, Program Coordinator for Stand4YOU, says the response has been overwhelming.

"I think one of the most rewarding comments was hearing from one of the staff members that they had an interaction with a student that they were concerned about, and thought about the Kognition training in the back of their mind as they were helping the student," she says.

Since it's launch, Diab says the 600 students and faculty members have taken the Kognito training.  She also says it will be available to students and faculty over the summer as well.

Kognito is part of a $302, 883 grant for suicide prevention.  The multi-pronged Stand4YOU campaign also includes discussion groups and other programs geared toward fostering early detection of mental health issues and changing student behavior by increasing their openness to seeking help.
