Officials: Israel Launches Airstrike Into Syria

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - American officials say Israel launched an airstrike against a suspected weapons site in Syria.

The officials told The Associated Press that the attack happened overnight Thursday into Friday.

One official says it did not appear that a chemical weapons site was targeted. And one official said the strike appeared to have hit a warehouse.

It's not the first time Israel has targeted weapons in the past that it believes are being delivered to the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah. The strike came days after Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said his group would assist Syrian President Bashar Assad if needed in the effort to put down a bloody, 2-year-old uprising.

Word of the strike came on the same day President Barack Obama told reporters at a news conference in Costa Rica on Friday that he didn't foresee a scenario in which the U.S. would send troops to Syria.
