Somerset Co. Tests Crisis Response With Surprise Drill At School

Posted: Updated:

WESTOVER, Md. - Tense moments for students at a Somerset County School, when it went into complete lockdown Friday morning, but no need to panic it was only a drill.

The school board came together with Maryland State Police to test the county's current crisis plan at the J. M. Tawes Technology and Career Center. We're told a scripted hostage situation took place with so-called active shooters in the school. This was a surprise crisis drill, no one at the school was notified beforehand.

"We are constantly looking at our safety procedures," said Vicki Carter, student service supervisor for secondary schools. "[We look at] what we can do to make our building safer, how we can make sure students are trained in what to do.

"We've been doing these for five years so it's not a result of recent events."

Police say this drill will give them a chance to make modifications to the current crisis plan in order to further ensure the safety of students in Somerset County.
