Obama To Pitch The Immigration Overhaul In Mexico

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is heading to Mexico with a domestic ambition at the top of his travel agenda. To win an immigration overhaul back home, he needs a growing economy in Mexico and a Mexican president willing to help him secure the border.

Obama flies to Mexico City on Thursday to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto (PANE'-ya Nee-ET'-o). There, he will promote Mexico's economic success and its place as the second largest export market for U.S. goods and services.

It's a pitch aimed at selling an immigration bill to Congress.

Obama aides say Mexico's cooperation is crucial to prevent illegal border crossings. And, they add, a growing Mexican economy is a disincentive to illegal immigration.
