Virginia Beach Improves Emergency Alert System

Posted: Updated:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Beach residents can now receive emergency alerts from the city by email or text message.

The city's emergency notification system previously was limited to distributing voice recorded messages to landline telephones within the city limits. Now anyone can sign up to receive alerts by text message on their cell phone or other mobile device, as well as by email, regardless of whether they live in Virginia Beach.

Events that may generate a message from the VBAlert system include evacuations, rabid animal alerts, hostage or barricade situations, boil water advisories and weather warnings.

Registration is required to receive alerts. Residents can sign up at www.VBgov.com/VBAlert .
