Lawsuit Over DE Police Strip Search Ends

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A woman who escaped drug charges after challenging a 2008 strip search by Milford police has settled a federal lawsuit.

In court papers Monday, Latoria Ellis' claims against a doctor involved in the incident were dismissed. She previously settled with Milford police.

According to court records, Ellis told an informant she had hidden a bag of cocaine inside her body. She was taken to a police station bathroom, where a female officer conducted a visual body cavity search. After Ellis refused to remove the bag, she was taken to a hospital, where she eventually removed it after a CT scan was done and a doctor ordered she be given a sedative.

A state judge ruled in 2009 that police should have obtained a warrant before conducting the visual cavity search.
