Petition Fights To Stop Social Media "Thinsperation"

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS - As a potentially dangerous campaign gains popularity on Twitter, a petition circulates to stop what many are calling harmful hashtags.

It's called Thinsperation, the practice of showing pictures or videos of slim women with their bones protruding. Right now, a recent petition is asking the social media mogul to ban hashtags like #thinspo, #proana and #promia.

WMDT spoke with a local dietician who weighs in on the matter.

"You have some people who think that a quarter ounce of body fat becomes a threat," said Dr. Gail Anderson, a medical weight loss specialist. "Those are dangerous and counterproductive and you need to seek psychological help."

Last year, other social media networks like Tumblr banned any self-harming posts.
