Eagle Rescued On VA's Eastern Shore To Be Released

Posted: Updated:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - An eagle rescued from Virginia's Eastern Shore earlier this month is set to return to the wild.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro says the immature bald eagle will be released Thursday at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia Beach.

The bird was brought to the center on March 9 after four dead eagles were found in Northampton County. State wildlife officials are investigating the other birds' deaths.

The surviving eagle was given a physical examination at the center. It was found to have elevated lead levels. Metal fragments were also detected in the bird's digestive track.

The eagle has fully recovered and has been deemed fit for release.
