Ocean City, A Sustainable Community

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Ocean City wants to strengthen reinvestment and revitalization of some of their older communities by applying for a designation through Maryland's "Sustainable Communities Act".

Under the program, Ocean City has identified "priority funding areas," mainly below 15th Street near the inlet, with redevelopment programs, including small business startup grants.

Being listed as a sustainable community would give Ocean City an advantage over other towns looking for funding says Matt Margotta, Director of Planning and Development.

"We would have a leg up on any community that is not part of the sustainable community plan to qualify higher for that grant."

Some initiatives he Ocean City would like to develop are possibly creating a historic district, encouraging the use of existing buildings in renovation, instead of erecting new buildings, and increasing incentive funds for environmentally-friendly energy renovations
