Apr. 26 - Memories Of Downtown

Posted: Updated:

GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - "MEMORIES OF DOWNTOWN" is a temporary, interactive, multimedia installation based on the testimonies of local residents recalling the days when downtown Salisbury was an active, vibrant gathering place. It was first displayed in December 2009.

During the Salisbury Festival "MEMORIES OF DOWNTOWN" will be in two locations.

On the lawn in front of the Old Courthouse Building, a large fabric sculpture will hang from the trees. The sculpture is an ongoing project which grows each time it is displayed. Phrases from the memories of local residents are transcribed on to long strips of colored fabric which are woven into the sculpture.

Right across the street, in the building on the corner of Division Street and the Downtown Plaza, there will be two projections. One screen will show a video of interviews with local residents who affectionately, humorously and poignantly recount personal stories of a downtown Salisbury that is long gone. On the second there will be photos of scenes of the downtown area from the 1940's thru the 70's. Many of these photos were literally saved from the dumpster.

Anyone interested in participating can stop by and share their memories of downtown Salisbury. There will be people on hand to assist participants, who can write a brief description, recall a memory in an interview or post a memory online.
