Students Head To "Destination Imagination" Global Finals

Posted: Updated:

HEBRON, Md. - With gold in hand a team of third-graders are celebrating a big win.

"We got first place out of 20 teams," said Gavin Parker, member of the "Funky Monkeys" Destination Imagination team.

The seven third-graders from Westside Intermediate School spent their entire school year on one award-winning project.

"We are raising money for Brooke Mulford to help make her wishes come true," said Funky Monkey Makenzie Johnson.

It took a few months, but the pint-sized party planners hosted "Brooke's Ball" in February for a young girl fighting cancer.

Complete with drinks, snacks and face painting, the team pulled in $3,000 for her charity.  And their efforts just earned them top honors at the Destination Imagination state championships.

"They took first place over all the teams in their age group," said team coach Jennifer Parker. "They were up against third through fifth graders, so they were a bit of the underdogs."

The kids were responsible for every detail of their project, from planning the dance to holding a press conference for D.I. judges at the championships.

"Now, we're gonna go to Tennessee and compete there with the top teams," said Gavin.

It's a week-long trip to the Global D.I. Finals, and now the Funky Monkeys are set to do some fundraising for themselves: they need three times what they raised for Brooke.

It will cover lodging, meals, travel and registration for each student and their chaperone.

The extra work makes them a little nervous because they only have a month to collect enough to cover their expenses.

But they're confident - they did it before - they can do it again.

"We're very proud of all the hard work we did," said Gavin.

If you'd like make a donation to the Funky Monkeys, you can send checks to:
