UPDATE: Delaware Lawmakers Eye Same-Sex Marriage

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Following an announcement from lawmakers earlier today, Delaware appears to be on it's way to becoming the next state to legalize same-sex marriage.

It's been just over a year since the state first began recognizing same-sex civil unions. Now, a bill will be the subject of a House committee hearing on Wednesday. At least one legislator, who is also a pastor says he is not supporting the measure.

"No disrespect at all between same-sex couples, if that's their decision, that's their decision," said Rep. Tim Dukes (R). "But my choice is to not call it marriage. Let it flow under civil unions. Give them the rights they feel they need and leave it that way."

Dukes says he wants the state to focus on the breakdown of the family and strengthening marriage.  Gov. Jack Markell (D) has already expressed his support of the bill and vows to sign it.
