DELAWARE - A major league sport is right in your backyard. Live harness racing has become a main attraction at Dover Downs and the Harrington Raceway.

"We have one guy named Cory Callahan. He's the top driver in the entire country right now and he races right at Dover Downs," said Heather Vitale, Director of Media Relations for the Delaware Standardbred Owner's Association.

The races are picking up so much speed, that the Delaware Standardbred Owner's Association is able to give away $6,000 to deserving students.

"We might give out three scholarships for $2,000 each or six for $1,000 each," said Vitale.

The candidates they're looking for must be members of the DSOA or be a child or grandchild of a member. While it's not a requirement, officials say they do hope the scholarship winner gives back to their club in the future, like recipient Rebecca Batson Kidner.

"She got a nursing degree then she got a law degree and now she's actually one of our lobbyists for the DSOA, so we're really proud of her," said Vitale.

There's plenty of time to apply for this scholarship. The deadline is September 30th. For more information head to the Delmarva Education Foundation's website:
