Speed And Alcohol Possible Factors In Fatal Quantico Crash

Posted: Updated:

QUANTICO, Md. - A fatal accident in Wicomico County is under investigation. The Sheriff's Office says they were called around 9:45 on Saturday night, to Wetipquin Road, near Lankford Road in Quantico. When deputies arrived on scene, they say they found a 2006 Dodge Pick-up truck overturned on the roadway, the driver had been pulled out by the Westside Volunteer Fire Department.

An investigation showed that the truck was driving at a high rate of speed, when the driver didn't follow the curve of the road, causing the truck to go off the side of the road, and hit a tree. Police say the vehicle went 130 feet before hitting and uprooting the tree, which also sheared off the driver's door. After hitting the tree, the truck reportedly continued another 153 feet, before hitting a second tree and overturning onto the road.

The driver, 51-year-old Alan Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say they believe that both speed and alcohol are factors in this crash.
