Kaine: Indv. Right, But Social Responsibility For Gun Control

Posted: Updated:

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - After a gun control bill passed this week in Maryland, one U.S. Senator expects discussion to pick up nationally.

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine (D) tells WMDT that the debate will pick up once they get back to session on Monday. Though initially taken out of the bill, Kaine says he expects two amendments to be proposed: a high capacity magazines, except in certain sports shooting; and a ban of certain assault style weapon.

"I'm a gun owner. I'm a strong believe in the 2nd Amendment," said Kaine. "When I was lieutenant governor, we worked on the constitutional amendment to protect Virginian rights to hunt and fish, but the 2nd Amendment is like the 1st amendment, it's like any of the amendments: there's an individual right but we also understand there's social responsibility as well.

"The gun owners that I know, by and large, understand they have a right, an individual right to own firearms, but, reasonable limitations to promote safety like background record checks."

Kaine says he expects a debate on the bill to last over the course of the next few weeks.
