Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Department Wins Federal Grant

Posted: Updated:

POCOMOKE, Md - U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin have announced a big boost to the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Department.

It's been awarded $163,000 in federal funding to purchase life-saving firefighting equipment through federal funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

"I know how important this funding is to Maryland communities – often it's the difference between life and death, Sen. Mikulski said. "The federal government has a responsibility to protect them by providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs safer and smarter."

The fire company will now be able to purchase 27 sets of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus units-- which allow firefighters to breathe inside smoke-filled buildings.

They will also purchase 35 new face masks.
