True Blue Initiative Helps Consumers Find Local Crab

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Is that really Maryland crab? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is making it easier for you to know for sure. This will be the 2nd year of their True Blue Initiative, a program aimed at certifying crab meat as Maryland's own.

Restaurants and retailers can participate easily, and once they do, the DNR will give them use of their official True Blue logo. The restaurant can  then display the logo on front door stickers, and mark it on their menu to let customers know they have certified Maryland blue crab.

"We have a lot of restaurants in this area and a lot of restaurants say they have Maryland crab meat on the menu and we want to show the consumers where they can actually get Maryland crab meat," said Steve Vilnit, Director of Fisheries for the MD-DNR.

People want to know, perhaps more than ever, where their food is sourced, and the True Blue Initiative is doing its part for Maryland blue crabs. Currently, there are over 150 restaurants participating and, Vilnit says, "That number is growing."
