RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State Sen. Harry Blevins plans to announce his retirement during Wednesday's single-day General Assembly session.
A Republican Senate official says the 77-year-old Blevins is exiting with two years left on his term. That sets up an August special election in Blevins' Chesapeake-based district for the seat he has held since 2001.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting Blevins' announcement in the Senate session beginning at noon.
Blevins was a member of the House for three years before winning a special election in 2001 to succeed Randy Forbes, who had been elected to Congress.
