LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 85 in Brunswick County that left five people dead and closed all southbound lanes.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya says the collision occurred when a 2006 Honda Ridgeline pickup truck traveling northbound on the southbound lane hit a 2011 Toyota Corolla head-on around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Anaya says four of those killed were in the car and one person was in the truck. It was unknown whether there were additional passengers in the pickup because of the magnitude of the crash.

Officials say it could take a couple of days before identities are released. It's unknown if alcohol or other factors contributed to the crash.

Transportation officials say the southbound lanes have reopened.
