Driver Up For Parole After Killing MD Student

Posted: Updated:

TOWSON, Md. (AP) - A drunken driver in prison for killing a Towson University student is up for parole after less than a year behind bars, and the victim's family is trying to keep him in prison.

It's been 11 months since Matthew Cheswick was struck and killed in Ocean City on Memorial Day 2012. The driver kept on driving after the crash.

Diogo Facchini of Lorton, Va., pleaded guilty to negligent homicide while under the influence of alcohol. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, though a judge suspended half the sentence. Court records show Facchini asked for a reduction in sentence a month after it was delivered.

Now Cheswick's family has been notified Facchini is eligible for a parole hearing.

Cheswick's friends have started a petition to keep Facchini behind bars.
