Locals Hold Fundraiser In Support Of Accomack Fire Fighters

WACHAPREAGUE, Va - Local residents are doing what they can to give Accomack County fire fighters all the support they can get while combating with a string of arsons.

"The fires are taking a huge toll on our community and the firefighters themselves. particularly, their families. Women and men are not seeing their families for a couple days at a time, sometimes they're going out three times a night so it's hard," says event coordinator Dana Floyd.

Starting at 1 p.m. until 1 a.m., the fundraiser will also include donated items that will be auctioned off. These items include a pair of bicycles, tickets to the Delmarva Shorebirds, and even an autographed baseball signed by Cal Ripken.

"I think it's terrific because we really needed somebody to kind of be the head or point person for it and focus on it because we've all wanted to do something and this is the perfect way to get all those resources together. They've told us what it is they want, and that makes it very easy" says local resident and donator Bill Burnham.

And even Jeffrey Pitts, Chief of Wachapreague Volunteer Fire Company, is impressed.

"At times, when you get up in the middle of the night and answer the ambulance call or fire call, you wonder: We're going through it because we want to give back tot he community and help those that need help. But it does, at times, make you wonder how much support we do have. When these types of things happen; this arsonist, continual fires night after night, and the public steps up and says 'What can we do to help? We can't be there with you every night with fire equipment and help with putting the fires out but we can be there to support you', that means a lot to me since they recognize what we do, they appreciate what we do and they will go take whatever steps they can to help us. The biggest help they could do is keep vigilant, keep their eyes out and help us and help state police catch this so we can stop them at night and get some sleep. It means awful lot to us to know that they're there. It makes us feel like what we're doing actually means something to the whole community"
