Arrest Made In January Smyrna Home Invasion

SMYRNA, Del. - Police have made an arrest in connection with a January home invasion assault. Delaware State Police arrested Martin Smith Sr., 41, of Dover, and charged him with the crime. Police say on January 25th, around 11:40 PM, someone knocked on the door of a Hedgerow Holloway Road home in Smyrna.

According to the report, the 38-year-old victim opened the door, and the was confronted by a man who said that he had hit the victim's car in front of the house. When the victim stepped outside, he was reportedly additionally confronted by a second suspect, both men had handguns and demanded money from the victim. Police say that the victim turned over cash and a written prescription for medication, to the suspects. The two suspects then reportedly forced the victim back into the home, and demanded more money. Police say that this second confrontation turned physical, during which the suspects hit the victim in the head, with the handgun.

The suspects then apparently fled from the home. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. An investigation lead Police to believe that this was not a random act, and that the victim had been targeted.

Police say they later obtained information which lead to Smith's arrest at his Nimitz Road home in Dover. After the arrest, Police searched the home, where thy reportedly found a Tec-DC9 handgun, a 9mm handgun, a .22 caliber handgun, along with various rounds of ammunition. Smith is charged with 1st degree robbery, 1st degree assault, home invasion, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, along with other related offences. He is being held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $185,000 bond.
