Accomack County Volunteer, Friends Fundraise For Firefighters

Posted: Updated:

WACHAPREAGUE, Va. Since November, you could say Blake Johnson has lived the life of a superhero.

Restaurant owner by day, volunteer firefighter by night.

But four months of arsons is a harsh reality and these heroes are feeling the pain.

"If a call comes in late at night, they're working late at night and often times in to the morning," said Johnson, Wachapreague Volunteer Firefighter and owner of Island House Restaurant. "Then, they got to get up and do their regular jobs on top of that."

Now, firefighters and the community are taking their time, not to rest from the arsons, but to recover resources. To help his firefighting brethren, Johnson, along with close friend Missy Lattimore and her husband are "filling their truck" for a fundraiser.

"Virginia Eastern Shore is like a 90-mile long small town," said Johnson. "Everybody knows everybody and everybody wants to help with this situation that's going on."

The idea started last Thursday when Lattimore and her husband went to Island House and told Johnson about filling up their red truck with donations.

A week later, it turned into an objective to raise water, Gatorade, energy drinks and, of course, money for the 15 volunteer fire and rescue stations across the county.

Johnson about filling up their red truck with donations."They need money for gas," said Lattimore. "They need money to be able to use whatever is important at each firehouse."

The event starts Friday, March 29th from 1 PM to 1 AM at the Island House Restaurant in Wachapreague.

All donations and auction proceeds, plus 10 percent of the restaurant's sales go directly in the new Accomack County's Firefighter's Assistance Fund.

Lattimore said her efforts won't end after the event and she'd be "happy to go wash trucks and collect supplies and use my talents to their advantage. This is not going to stop the goal for them to have continued support until this if over and beyond that."

Lattimore adds that firefighters from Tasley, Onancock, Wachapreague and others will attend the event.  Also, she expects an appearance from Tasley's Sparky The Dog at 6 PM.
