WICOMICO CO., Md. - The driver of the Shore Transit bus which struck and killed an elderly woman last year will have to pay a fine for the accident. According to court documents, 55-year-old Charles Carey, will now pay up to $140, after pleading guilty to a charge of negligent driving.
Wicomico County State's Attorney, Matt Maciarello, says jail time is not a punishment under state law, for a charge of negligence driving. He says it's up to the civil court to remedy the loss. A charge of "gross negligence" would carry a heavier penalty.
Back in September, the 72-year-old victim died after she was run over by the bus at the intersection of Cedar and North Dulany avenues in Fruitland.
Maciarello says the driver and the victim were great friends, saying the driver even cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the victim before. Police say, he too, lost a friend.
