Goodwill Launches Program To Help Single Mothers Find Jobs

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - The brand new Goodwill Job Resource Center in Bridgeville is now up and running. Just about two weeks after the Grand Opening, they're already in the process of helping 20 people find work. But now, they're focusing their efforts on a specific group of folks who need the help most.

55-year-old Valerie Dean is a single mother of a now successful 33-year-old daughter. It wasn't easy, but she struggled through it.

"After she graduated from high school and went to college, that was really rough. I found myself then working three jobs," she said.

Even now, she still needs help finding work, which is why she came to Beyond Jobs -- a Goodwill program just for single moms. Valerie admits she could have used this years ago.

"Back then, I had a little bit of support. When you have agencies around, use them," she said.

This program isn't just about job placement. When a single mom walks through the doors, they get a private one-to-one session - expert advice on a long-term plan for the whole family. It's about thriving in and outside the workplace.

"We are noticing that here in Delaware and Delaware County, that single mothers are twice as likely to be unemployed than married mothers," Bridgeville Job Resource Center Manager John Rodriguez said.

If you're a single mom worried about the future, you're not alone. In fact 26% of all children now grow up in families headed by single mothers according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

So take it from Valerie. "I just want to say, the help is here - use it. Use it because that really means a lot," she said.

Beyond Jobs will help you design an individualized plan that includes financial education, career development planning, family strengthening services, early education and child care assistance and connections to healthy food and nutrition initiatives.
