UPDATE: Victim Identified In Fatal Wingate Fire

Posted: Updated:

WINGATE, Md. - A fire in Wingate Wednesday afternoon claimed the life of the only person inside.

The fire broke out shortly after 4 PM, Firefighters soon arrived, nearly 85 in all, from 13 different volunteer departments, and controlled the blaze within a half hour. They found the victim, identified as 89 year-old Robert Viguelle Mills, in the kitchen and quickly took him to Dorchester General Hospital.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Chief Medical Examiner determined that Mills died due to injuries from severe smoke inhalation.

Mills was the sole occupant of the house, located at 2126 Wingate Bishops Head Road. The cause of the fire is still under investigation; however, investigators have determined that no smoke alarms were located in the house.
