Hundreds Turn Out To Discuss 2nd Amendment In Wicomico CO.

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. - Folks on both sides of the gun control issue are fired up, about proposed gun legislation up for discussion in both Maryland and on capitol hill.

Local politicians and law enforcement held a town hall meeting Monday night to let the public know how legislation across the bridge could effect them here on Delmarva.

The hundreds who made their way out to hear Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis and his panel of 10 speak on proposed gun legislation agreed with what they were hearing.

Maryland Delegate Mike McDermott voiced his concerns, namely, that the bill doesn't tackle the right issues.

"There's not anything in this bill that addresses our school problems, there's nothing in this bill that addresses gun crimes," says McDermott, "if we not going to do those things, all this stuff is just basically worthless fodder that makes people feel good, but does nothing to solve a problem"

Many at the forum expressed concerned over losing firearms for hunting or self-defense, but for others, the overall right to bear arms was the biggest issue.

"It's against the law really, the primary law which is against the constitution," says David Rothwell of Tyaskin.  He also brought his young son Nicholas to the town hall, saying "our only real hope is to pass these principals on to our children, one of them the right to keep and bear arms."

The Maryland gun legislation passed the State Senate last month, but has been tied up in the Maryland House.

A vote is expected toward the end of the week.
