Rep. Harris Speaks Sequester With Salisbury HS After Letters

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - What started as letters from one Salisbury high school U.S. government class turned into a town hall style meeting with a congressional leader.

"All of us had these different opinions and a few of us were like "I want to write a letter" and everybody broke out and said "let's write a letter to the government," said 10th grader Rebecca Hall.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) spoke at James M. Bennett High School earlier about the effects the sequester may have on the local economy.

After answering questions from students, he spoke with WMDT about what last week's budget means for on the Shore.

"The sequester cut is relatively small compared to the size of the budget," said Harris. "I think it's going to cause the government to be more efficient and as I urge them, they should insist the government should be efficient with their dollars, because they're the generation that's going to have to pay this all back."

Briante Lewis, a 10th grade student says she learned that "they tried to make a compromise and that they made to like help out."

The Congressman adds that the Appropriations Committee will start discussions on the best way to handle the sequester cuts after the Senate passed a budget last week.
