A Soldier's Homecoming

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - "I'm - I'm excited. I just can't wait," said Missy Barone, as she nervously wrung her hands.

A plane was just about to touch down at the Salisbury airport. It was a moment she waited an entire year for: her son Ryan's return from Afghanistan.

Surrounded by crowds of friends and family, Missy and her husband darren were overwhelmed with emotion.

"I'm anxious and happy and proud," said Darren Barone.

And just after 9 p.m. Saturday night, the wait was over, and Ryan couldn't ask for a warmer welcome.

"It was overwhelming," said PFC Ryan Legar as he described walking through the doors to a  packed waiting area. "But it's good to be back though, for sure."

He'll have about a month to soak it all in, but then he's headed to Seattle, where he's stationed with the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion.

But having him stateside only slightly eases his family's fears.

"You worry, the minute they leave, you worry," said Darren Barone. "We want all of them to get back, as soon as they can."

"I think about when he was younger and I was teaching him how to tie his shoes," he continued.  "And the next thing you know, your son is off to war."

The years may have flown by, but for now, it's time for Ryan and his family to slow down.

"I think I'm just going to kick back and relax with the family and friends after the deployment," said Legar.

There was one more surprise for Ryan waiting for him at the airport.

Missy Barone says her 20-year-old son has always dreamed of having his family's white Corvette and it was parked out front - decked out in American flags.
